In the globalizing world, increasing trade volume, rising costs, and environmental sustainability goals have heightened the importance of intermodal transportation in the logistics sector. With its strategic location between Asia and Europe, Turkey possesses the potential to become a logistics hub. Carried out in line with this objective, the Filyos Valley Project is an integrated regional development project comprising Filyos Port, the Filyos Industrial Zone, and the Filyos Free Zone. Located in the Çaycuma district of Zonguldak and with origins dating back to the reign of Sultan Abdulhamid II, Filyos Port was identified as one of the priority ports in the TINA report. Planned to have an annual cargo handling capacity of 25 million tons, the port features an infrastructure capable of serving 13 ships simultaneously with a 2,450-meter main breakwater, a 1,370-meter secondary breakwater, and a 3,000-meter quay with depths ranging between 14 and 19 meters. It aims to serve as a transshipment hub between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean while easing the traffic burden on the Turkish Straits. The project offers a robust intermodal infrastructure by integrating highway (connection to the Ankara-Istanbul highway), railway (the Irmak-Karabük-Zonguldak line with 12 km of new line and 415 km of track improvements), maritime, and airway (Zonguldak Çaycuma Airport located 5 km away) networks. Representing the Black Sea pillar of Turkey's "Three Major Ports in Three Seas" vision, Filyos Port aims to boost regional economic development and international competitiveness by providing low-cost, fast, safe, and environmentally friendly transportation options.
