Obezite
Obesity among children, adolescents, and adults has emerged as one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century, ranking second only to smoking among preventable causes of death. Defined by the World Health Organization as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that impairs health, obesity has shown an alarming increase both globally and in Turkey over recent years. The development of childhood obesity is multidimensional, driven by genetic, biological, prenatal, early childhood, psychosocial, behavioral, and environmental factors. This condition triggers severe physiological and psychosocial complications in children, including insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, hypertension, respiratory issues, bone fragility, precocious pubertal development, and low self-esteem. Obesity management is structured across five progressive treatment phases: preventive counseling, prevention +, structured weight management, comprehensive multidisciplinary intervention, and tertiary care. Throughout this process, nurses play a critical role by routinely monitoring children's physical growth and development, evaluating dietary and physical activity habits, implementing motivational interviewing strategies, and fostering comprehensive collaboration among families, schools, and healthcare networks.
