This study investigates the effect of a constructivist approach supported by creative thinking on 11th-grade students' conceptual understanding and drawings reflecting mental models at the submicroscopic level in the topic of energy in chemical reactions, in comparison with the traditional approach. Conducted with 42 11th-grade students (control group N=22, experimental group N=20) in a public high school in Ankara, the research utilized a posttest-only control group quasi-experimental design. During the four-week distance education process, the experimental group was taught using the 5E learning cycle integrated with creative thinking techniques such as brainstorming, simulation, analogy, creative reverse thinking, and synectics, whereas the control group received traditional teacher-centered instruction. The results revealed that the concept test score average of the experimental group (X̅ = 7.50) was statistically significantly higher than that of the control group (X̅ = 4.18) (p = 0.013). However, no statistically significant difference was found between the groups regarding the accuracy and detail scores of the students' drawings. A high positive correlation (r = 0.754) was identified between the drawing accuracy and detail scores across all participants, demonstrating that detailed thinking depends directly on domain knowledge. Furthermore, qualitative findings showed that constructivist instruction supported by creative thinking facilitated student understanding, motivation, and real-life connections.
