This study aims to examine the effect of nature of science instruction based on an explicit-reflective approach on 9th-grade students' views on the nature of science and their academic achievement. Conducted with 96 students (48 experimental, 48 control group) in an Anatolian high school in Ankara, the research utilized a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design. During the seven-week intervention, the experimental group was taught through an explicit-reflective teaching approach using activities such as designing atomic models, documentary analysis, "what's in the box", and creating a periodic system, while the control group followed the standard curriculum. Data were collected using the Views of Nature of Science Questionnaire (VNOS-C), semi-structured individual interviews, a two-tier Atomic Models Achievement Test, and concept maps. Prior to the intervention, both groups had similar academic achievement levels and naive views on the nature of science. Following the implementation, no significant change was observed in the control group's views or achievement, whereas students in the experimental group demonstrated significant progress in their views on the nature of science. Experimental group students adopted informed views aligned with contemporary scientific understanding, particularly regarding the tentative nature of scientific knowledge, the distinction between observation and inference, and socio-cultural aspects. Furthermore, the experimental group achieved a statistically significant increase in academic achievement scores compared to the control group. The findings demonstrate that the explicit-reflective teaching approach is highly effective in developing students' scientific literacy and enhancing their academic performance.
