Özet

This study examines wheat cultivation and the implementation of conservation tillage methods in the Adana region of Turkey. Adana represents a prominent agricultural hub contributing about 3.8% of Turkey's total wheat output, benefiting from fertile clay loam soils and a favorable Mediterranean climate. Historically, wheat farming in Adana has relied heavily on conventional tillage methods that feature intensive soil inversion, residue burning or burial, and frequent machinery operations, resulting in accelerated soil compaction, erosion, high fuel consumption, and significant organic matter depletion. In response to these sustainability challenges, conservation tillage is recommended based on three core principles: maintaining at least 30% crop residue on the soil surface, minimizing field traffic, and adopting systematic crop rotations involving crops like cotton, corn, and legumes. Specific practical applications include chisel plows, disc harrows, rototillers, and direct sowing techniques. Academic research in the region demonstrates that transitioning to reduced or no-till practices effectively enhances soil aggregate stability, boosts organic carbon content, preserves soil moisture, and achieves 81–86% savings in fuel and time compared to traditional approaches. Consequently, adopting conservation tillage provides an economically viable and environmentally protective alternative for sustainable long-term wheat production in Adana.
